Week of Dreams
POSTED AT 07:38 PM

Next week's a pretty eventful week for me. It's finally time for me to wrest control back of my life and turn it in the right direction.

Monday is the customary paying of dues to my diminishing duty at work. I may have handed over my responsibilities already, but like the dutiful worker that I am, I will still return to do my part in keeping everything going smoothly.

Tuesday, the fulfillment of a long awaited vow with a friend of mine to sample some of the finest culinary delights that a certain quaint little feeding spot on the outskirts of the country has to offer. We've planned this for ages, but until Tuesday has only remained as that - all talk, no action. Hopefully nothing comes up last minute to throw a spanner in the works!

Wednesday, the beginning of a long-made promise to myself. I'm going for a placement test to assess my competency of the German language so that I can be streamed into the appropriate level to begin my German language classes. I've been looking through my secondary school material these last couple of weeks; hopefully the revision would put me at least on a level close to the peak of my ability - when I returned from my 3 week stay in Germany.

Thursday, the culmination of two year's worth of effort. It's an achievement award that I worked hard for back in JC, but missed the ceremony dateline. Now, two years on, is the next round of the presentation ceremony, and I can finally get the reward for which I strived.

Friday, the start of another journey. The first foray into the world of driving, with the Basic Theory Test. Once I get that out of the way, I can finally move into my practical lessons. One step closer to a whole new world of mobility and convenience.

Many things to look forward to. If things even go half as well as planned, I would be pretty satisfied.

The Return of the Haze
POSTED AT 06:49 PM

It looks like the haze is back. It got pretty bad yesterday night; you could really smell it as you moved around outside, and it crept in amongst everything and shrouded the surrounding with a misty, blurry appearance.

It's also a good excuse to cut back on outdoor exercise, and to sleep in aircon at night. :p

Weezer split shock
Band on hiatus, singer reveals

Weezer could never make a record again, according to singer Rivers Cuomo.

The band's last album was 2005's 'Make Believe'.

"For the moment we are done. And I'm not certain we'll ever make a record again, unless it becomes really obvious to me that we need to do one," he said.

Cuomo said that he had been writing lots of songs, but not for the band.

He revealed: "All this year, I've been feeling pretty creative and excited, so I've been writing a lot. I don't know what'll happen with these songs - if anything - I just sort of write them and I can't stop. I certainly don't see them becoming Weezer songs, and I don't really see the point of a solo career. So we'll just have to wait and see."

Titles of two of the new tracks are 'Heart Songs' and 'Our Time Will Come'.

Although the end of the band is in sight, Cuomo does not want to release a 'Greatest Hits'.

"I'm not convinced that we have a greatest hits album that is worth putting out at this point. I'd like to include two more amazing songs on there. And anything else would just seem lazy to me. We'll see, though. I don't really feel comfortable with it now," he told MTV.

Actually, it might just be for the best, before more Perfect Situations and We Are All On Drugs tip the scales on the Say It Ain't Sos and Pink Triangles.

If it were up to me to decide on the line-up for a Weezer Greatest Hits album, I would put it something like this:

1) You Gave Your Love to Me Softly
2) Island in the Sun
3) Jamie
4) The Good Life
5) Slob
6) No One Else
7) Keep Fishing
8) Buddy Holly
9) Undone
10) Across the Sea
11) Holiday
12) Mykel and Carli
13) Say It Ain't So
14) Pink Triangle
15) Butterfly
16) Only in Dreams

Zap!
POSTED AT 12:08 PM

So yesterday I was at the gymnasium toilet at my old school, showering after a long afternoon out in the sun. It was dusk by the time we called it a day, and it was slowly growing darker by the minute.

Unfortunately, due to ongoing construction works, the building was in a sort of transition phase, and the light switches to the toilet were mere holes in the wall. The switch fixture had eroded away, leaving the electrical fixtures exposed underneath. The lights were off, and the evening hour meant that the toilet was bathed in semi-darkness.

Well, I don't like semi-darkness, so I decided to venture forth to try and switch on the lights. My friend had done the same thing a couple of weeks back; somehow he had managed to switch on the lights by flicking something in that mess of electrical fixtures.

So I tried, too. Bad choice. I think somebody needs to call up the Darwin Awards.

The moment I reached in I got a huge electrical shock. It was a pretty big shock, not like those itsy bitsy teeny weeny kinds that you can get from a battery. It felt as if something hard struck me from behind suddenly.

I don't know how much electricity that was. Don't the lights run on 220V?

That was pretty stupid, I admit. I'm just glad nothing happened. Luckily my hands were dry; if they weren't perhaps things might have turned out slightly differently.

Morbidity
POSTED AT 12:01 AM

I had a strange dream last night - I dreamt that I died and wandered around as a restless spirit.

I can't really recall many details now - the vivid memories of dreams usually fade shortly after waking. But I remember feeling very disconcerted, to say the least.

And to make things stranger, I also remember at one point in the dream I tried to discount the reality of the dream world I found myself in by considering the possibility of it being a dream. Alas, my subconscious had created so convincing a reality that I found myself rejecting that possibility.

I wonder if it is a sign of the future?

Viva la Vivo
POSTED AT 01:39 AM

I took a trip down to the much vaunted, newly constructed, soon-to-have-grand-opening Vivo City at Harbourfront today. There's been quite a bit of hype about this new megamall located out of the city area, so I thought it'll be good to see it for myself.

I must say, it's pretty big. Huge. Enormous. And a true shopper's paradise - with the big boys like Giant, Tangs and Golden Village to anchor the ship, plus a whole range of garment stores like Zara, Gap, Mango, Topshop, Esprit to draw in the crowds, and niche favourites like Carl's Jr., La Senza and Best Denki just to spice things up.

It has pretty much everything that you would need on a shopping escapade. Perhaps the only thing missing IMO would be a big bookstore like Borders or Kino.

But that's not all. The third floor opens up nicely on to a terrace lined with fountains, seating areas and paved walkways which overlook the coast elegantly. I think it would be a great setting at night; it gives the splendid waterfront feeling one used to get only at the Fullerton or Esplanade area.

Convenience-wise, it's nothing much to me - it's about the same amount of hassle and travelling time as going to town. But I'm sure it must be a huge draw for the millions living along the NEL.

I think it's great. I only hope it doesn't get too crowded there.

The Soon-not-to-be-unemployed
POSTED AT 03:07 AM

I've found myself a job. At this point in time, I think I need it. I have too much time on my hands and my savings are depleting fast. Getting a job would not only supplement my income but also kill precious time that might otherwise have been spent incurring expenses.

I think it's quite an exciting business idea, so even though I'm not investing in the company or anything like that I think it would be pretty interesting to be part of it. If you've ever done any online shopping you might realise that most of the online stores - bar the big ones like amazon.com - only accept American credit cards, ie. the credit cards need to be registered to an American billing address. So these online stores are closed to us Singaporeans with our Singaporean Mastercards, Visas and even Amexes. What this company does then is to act as the middleman by providing customers with their own American billing address and shipping address, so the customer can also save on shipping costs by shipping the product locally to an American address. It's kind of like the vConcierge service that vPost provides too.

My job is mainly to man the Customer Service livechat, and to help out with other jobs if necessary, such as perhaps doing some market research on various products. It's $10/hr, which I think is pretty decent, and I think it would go a long way to padding my trip to Taiwan.
